Quick Updates

Yesterday, Goob started army crawling and he even tried to get up on his hands and knees. I'm sure he'll be fully mobile by the New Year.

Tomorrow, the Goobie and I are flying to Houston to spend a few days with my parents. I'm terrified of the hour long flight. Wish us luck.

Monday, December 8, 2008

I think I found Goob's calling.

He's going to be a race car driver!

"Okay, maybe if I let Mom take one picture of me, she'll put the camera down and push me."

"Fine, take a close up. Then put the darn camera down and push me. I want to feel the wind in my curls!"

"Jeez. What is my mother doing? Push me. QUIT TAKING PICTURES!"

"HAHA! My grandpa came to my rescue. Push me higher!!"

"I'm too fast for you, Mommy. No pictures, please. I've got to concentrate!"

A Trip to the SA Zoo Last Month

At the beginning of last month, we went to visit my inlaws in San Antonio. We decided to visit the zoo. Here's a few pics.

I'm Giving Myself a Pat on the Back

This shirt is my worst enemy. My husband has had it since at least our senior year of college (03-04). Everytime he wears it, I cringe. It's awful and embarassing. And look how worn out it is. It's even got paint splattets. Ugh. And it's definitely not something a father should wear.

So a few weeks ago, I hatched a plan. (cue evil laugh.) I was going to dispose of the shirt. But I had to be very sneaky. If I just threw it away, I knew my husband would have a fit.

Last Sunday, I put it in the wash. I washed and dryed it. And then I put it on the top shelf above the machines.

My husband asked for it twice, and I just told him it was in the laundry room/garage. He never went and actually looked for it so it stayed up on that top shelf.

Last Friday, I took it from the top and "accidentally" dropped it in a dark corner beside the machine. The hubby never asked for it.

It really is a dark corner. The flash just brightened it up. It was in the dark corner until yesterday.

Yesterday as I was doing another load of laundry, I picked it up and put it in my laundry trash. And when I say I put it in the trash, I mean I rolled it up as small as possible, and put it at the very bottom of the trash.

(Yes, that's my laundry trash bag. Yes, it's a wedding gift bag. When I got married 17 months ago, we were blessed with many many presents. So now I use the old wedding gift bags as laundry room trash bags. I'm going green.)

So, now it sits there. Trash day is tomorrow. J usually collects all the trash in the mornings. Cross your fingers that he doesn't start looking for it between now and then. And cross your fingers that he doesn't go peeking through the trash.

I'm giving myself a big pat on the back for getting this far. In 24 hours, that shirt should be history.

Not Me Monday

For some reason the above picture isn't linking back to MckMama's site, so here's the link. Sorry about that.

Let's see....

I did not call in sick to work on Thursday because I didn't trust J to take Goob to the doctor's office and report back to me EVERYTHING that was said. I am not a weirdo who likes my husband to repeat verbatim entire conversations that I've missed. I did not consider going to work and making him video tape his conversation.

I did not go to Goob's day care on Thursday and throw a minor hissy fit. I did not demand/request that I not have to pay for day care next week since they failed to notify all parents when a child was diagnosed with RSV and then give it to my son. I then did not feel bad after I left for being so crazy. My husband and I did not do a small happy dance for saving $105.

I did not dread going to work on Friday because we had a stupid school carnival. I did not complain the whole time. Me complain? Never. I did not eat a bag of too salty popcorn. I did not bolt out the door as soon as we had cleaned up. I did not forget to say goodbye to anyone.

I did not slip and slide on a muddy patch on the way to my car. And I most certainly did not cuss as I was falling. And I did not drive home covered in mud. And my husband did not take one look at me and laugh when I got home.

My Fire-breathing Dinosaur

As part of his treatment plan, Goob has to have a nebulizer treatment every 4 to 6 hours. The first few treatments were awful. He cried, he screamed, he was so sad. But he's gotten used to it. Now, he wears his dinosaur mask like a big boy. He even has learned to ROAR at us (we spent many treatments teaching him).

Here's our dino:

He's doing much better. The wheezing and coughing are almost gone. He'll only start coughing just before his treatment.

He's still got a runny nose and a little diarrhea. But doc said that's great since that's what's getting all the mucus and such out of his body.

And look he's still his crazy self.

Thursday, November 20, 2008

It's RSV.

We just left the ped. It's official. He's got RSV. We are on our way to the pharmacy to get a nebulizer. That's really the only treatment for him. Doc said that nebulizer will help as he fights off the virus. It's just a waiting game now.

RSV

I just called the day care to see how Goob was doing because his teacher called me earlier and said that he wasn't eating well. He'll eat just a few ounces instead of the usual 5 or 6. So I was calling to see how he's doing and if he's eaten any better.

Well, I'm talking to the teacher and she said that he's still not eating well. He ate some and then fell asleep. But he's not fussy and he doesn't have a fever. He's just not eating. Strange.

As we're talking she just casually mentions that another of the kids got diagnosed with RSV last week. So now I'm kind of panicked. I've looked at the list of symptoms and he's experienced some of them. So I put a call into the peds office to see what they say.

And I'm kind of pissed that they haven't mentioned this sooner to me. If she got diagnosed last week, shouldn't they have let all the parents know????

My Car

This morning as I was leaving for work, I had a realization. It came to me when I was snapping Goob's (empty) car seat into the base. (Empty, because his dad to him to daycare.)

My realization is that I am a mom and I drive a mom's car.

When I was in high school, I drove a teenager's car. The car was ancient. The windows didn't work. And the AC was iffy. But it was glorious! My own set of wheels. I had my dance team clothes in piles in the back. I had no less than 2 pairs of pom-poms. I had tons of magazines, CDs, several empty cups. And I'll admit a ton of trash from eating fast food. I also had at least 2 or 3 other girls who I was carpooling with.

When I was in college, I drove a college student's car. It was a new car, a hs grad gift from my parents. It was silver and it could go FAST! (Believe me, I got at least 4 speeding tickets during my sophomore year) In the car, I had sorority binders and folders. A KDX jacket. I had huge textbooks that weighed more than small children. I had paper and pencils. I had my student ID with Aggie bucks! I had football tickets. I had my boyfriend who relied on me to take his booty everywhere since he was carless. I had my two roommates who decided they liked my car better than theirs.

When I graduated and became a teacher, I had a teacher's car. I had retired my Fast Silver Car and inherited my mom's impala. It was okay. It was bigger and more roomy. I now had papers to grade littering the back seat. I had red pens and stickers in the cup holders. I had a new expensive purse in the seat next to me since I was now making good money and had no one to support. I had take out food in the backseat since there was no way on earth I was ever cooking.

Now I am a mom and I have a mom's car. It's a crossover with a lot of room. It's new and has all the safety features a new mom could ever need. I have a car seat in the back seat. In the very back, I have 2 strollers, one an umbrella stroller, one a full-size stroller. I have a pack of old size two diapers that we never used. I have wipes. I have a stocked and ready to go diaper bag just in case. I have a pacifier in the cup holders. I have a sippy cup in the back seat and several toys. I have 2 Winnie the Pooh towels. I have a 6 CD changer. At least 3 of the CDs currently in rotation are nursery rhymes that I can sing at the top of my lungs to calm a crying baby.

I drive a mom's car. And I love it.

On the way to the dr.

I picked up Goob about half an hour ago. His teacher said that he was a little fussy today and that he keeps pulling on his ear. I noticed the ear pulling yesterday. I'm almost positive he has an ear infection. Plus, he's had a cough for a few weeks. Some days it gets better, others it gets worse. I want to get him looked at so we have an appointment in 20 minutes at the doc down the street.

But I'm pissed. J and I had a fight on the way home. Not a fight fight, but an arguement. Well, I yelled at him and hung up on him and he got pissed and is now ignoring my calls. That was okay before I picked up Goob, it's not okay now that I have a sick baby.

Answer the damn phonE!

We'll see

So J and I did some talking.

I think we're going to start trying for #2 next August. The only condition is that we need Jose to get some sort of pay raise between now and then. He's due for one so that shouldn't be a problem.

Goob will be 16 months old when we start trying and 2 years old when new baby is hopefully born.

I hope it all works out. We'll see. Only time will tell.

I'm not Super-Teacher...Thank goodness.

So this is my 5th year of teacher. For the past 4 years, I've been busting my booty trying to do everything.

One of my many projects was taking over my school's UIL program. It's a competition between schools in different academic events. I've been the coordinator for 3 years. I had to pick out coaches, recruit students, arrange for transportation and meals, manage the students and collaborate with other schools. It's a pain in the butt. And the only perk is the paycheck. It's an extra $900.

I even did this last year. Our big meet last year was in February. I was 7 months pregnant and miserable, but I got through it. (You should've seen my legs after that. I was so swollen.)

Anyway, this year I am already stressed about it. Last night I went to bed thinking of everything I had to do. I even got up extra early to get to school early to get some things done. I had to leave my baby and husband in bed to go. Well, on my way to work I decided that it's not worth it. Yes, $900 would be great, but it's not necessary. I'd rather not have to stress myself out about it. I got to work and asked my great friend, Ada, to take it on and she said yes.

As soon as the words came out of her mouth, I felt this huge weight lifted off my shoulders. Ahhh.

I'm not going to feel guilty about it. I have a 6 month old. I have a husband. I have my students to worry about. I'll focus on them, not extracurriculars.

Not Me Monday!

I did not make my husband wake up and drive me to work on Friday morning just so he'd have to pick me up and bring my son. I did not want to show off my beautiful baby.

I did not purposely drive badly on the way to the inlaws so J would insist that I not be allowed to drive.

I did not hand off my baby every chance I got this weekend so I could have a break.

I did not use the baby as an excuse to go to bed super early.

I did not call in sick for work on Friday so we could take an extra long vacation.

I did not insist that we go to the zoo and then complain that it was too hot. It was.

I did not watch The Happening right before bed and freak out and have nightmares.

I did not tell J the wrong directions to the portrait studio and we weren't 20 minutes late.

You know you are living in 2008 when...

You know you are living in 2008 when...

1. You accidentally enter your PIN on the microwave.

2. You haven't played solitaire with real cards in years.

3. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of three.

4. You e-mail the person who works at the desk next to you.

5. Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that they don't have e-mail addresses.

6. You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is home to help you carry in the groceries.

7. Every commercial on television has a web site at the bottom of the screen.

8. Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you didn't even have the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn around to go and get it.

10. You get up in the morning and go on line before getting your coffee.

11. You start tilting your head sideways to smile. : )

12. You're reading this and nodding and laughing.

13. Even worse, you know exactly to whom you are going to forward this message.

14. You are too busy to notice there was no #9 on this list.

15. You actually scrolled back up to check that there wasn't a #9 on this list.

Wow.

A historic day.

It's certainly not the outcome I would have liked, but even I can't deny that it's history in the making.

(It just hurts a little.)

Success!

The Segura family has cast our votes! And now we wait!

Voting, Part 1

This morning Goob and I left the house at 7 drove a quarter mile to our polling place. As I pulled in, I saw a line of about 50 people already. I needed to be on my way to work at 7:30 to not be late. So we got in line, Goob was just content to people watch. The line moved slowly. At around 7:20, Goob decided he was tired of standing in line and spit up all over my shirt. Seriously. So we left. I was able to salvage my shirt with baby wipes and a jacket. I dropped Goob off at 7:30 and made it to work just in time.

We'll try again when J gets home. We decided we'll walk to our polling place. It'll be fun.

Wish us luck.

Monday, November 3, 2008

I just want to go to sleep and wake up on Wednesday.

I just want to skip Election Day. I don't want to be bombarded with McCain and Obama talk. I'm just so sick of it. This is crazy coming from me cause I have a degree in political science, but I'm just done. At this point, I don't even care who wins...nevermind, I still care.

Goob and I are going to get an early start tomorrow. I want to be at my polling place at 7 am tomorrow when they open so I don't have to wait in line.

Then I'm going to home from work and I'm not even going to turn it on to live tv. I'm just gonna watch DVR shows. I'll wait and find out who wins Wednesday morning.

Not Me Monday

I did not only buy one bag of candy so I wouldn't have to answer the door all night.

I did not get lost on a walk with Goob on Saturday morning. And I did not call my husband to try to figure out how to get home.

I did not go and spend $30 on a gift for a party on Saturday night and then not go to party.

I did not drag my husband shopping and out to dinner on Saturday night. I did not have a wonderful drink at Joe's Crab Shack and leave my hubby to take care of the boy.

I did not wake up early on Sunday morning to go shopping at Target. It was pure bliss, no one was there.

I did not make my husband go on a walk last night and I did not make up take the long way.

I did not get McDonald's for breakfast this morning.

I did not make my husband pick up Goob from day care early since he was getting off work early.

I did not come home from work and make my husband help me clean.

Goob's solids

So far we're mastered:

  • bananas
  • carrots
  • pears
  • sweet potatoes
  • peaches
  • applesauce
  • squash

We still need to get through:

  • peas
  • prunes
  • green beans (Goob didn't like this when we first tried them, so we're trying again in a few days!

After we get through these, we're moving on to stage 2! My baby's growing up WAY TOO FAST!

In other news, we're traveling to Houston this weekend to visit my family. We are leaving super early Friday morning (~4am) because I have an eye doctor appt that I can't miss. And Jose's working Thursday night, so it's going to be up to me to get everything packed and ready to go for Friday morning. I'm betting that I'm going to have to drive too. Ugh. I'm going to start making my packing lists at school this morning. I always do better when I have a list. We'll see how it goes.

I have some awesome pics to post later today. Goob went on a bear hunt!

Off to work!

Not Me Monday!

I'm finally jumping on the "Not Me Mondays" bandwagon.

I did not order a strawberry margarita on Friday night and just throw it away.

I did not drag my boys 20 miles to visit a pumpking patch just to take pictures.

I did not embarass my husband by harassing another family to take our picture at said pumpkin patch.

I did not beg my husband to get up with Goob two nights in a row because I was "sick."

I did not have a hissy fit when my husband came home 30 minutes late for work.

I did not tell my coworker that she couldn't borrow my Twilight book because I had promised it to someone else when really I just wanted to read it again.

And I most certainly did not do a little dance this evening when I realized that it's my husband's turn to wake up with the boy.

We have a tooth!

So Goob pulled my finger into his mouth and OUCH! There was something sharp in there. My first thought was "Oh crap! What did he pick up and put in his mouth?" Then I looked and I can see some white coming through. It's gonna end up being the left bottom front tooth! Exciting!

Goob's first ER visit

First of all, I feel like a horrible mommy. I broke one of those rules I swore I would never do.

So yesterday afternoon, I was getting ready to go meet a friend and her daughter for lunch. J was ironing his clothes for work in the living room. I put Goob's car seat on our arm chair and put Goob in it. I didn't buckle him in because I knew that as soon as I buckled him in, he would start crying. So I just sat him in there and told DH to keep an eye on him. I ran to the kitchen and grabbed a bottle to throw in the diaper bag.

Well, the unthinkable happened. Goob was fidgeting around and he leaned forward in the car seat. When he leaned forward, he fell out on to our hardwood floors. J was across the room and couldn't get to him in time before he hit the ground. As soon as I heard what happened I ran back. J was picking him up.

My poor baby was crying so hard. I was screaming and shaking and crying. I honestly felt like my life flashed in front of my eyes. J was the calm one. As soon as I could stop shaking, I got Goob in my arms. I was still really crying. But, as soon as Goob saw that I was crying, he started laughing! He thought it was the funniest thing ever to see his mommy with mascara and tears all over her face. At that point, I calmed down alot.

We couldn't tell where he landed, we just knew he landed face down. We didn't see any bumps or red marks or anything like that. But we decided to go the ER just in case. We live 2 minutes from the hospital and they let us right back to triage. Within 30 minutes, we had seen a doctor.

The doc examined him. Nothing. He couldn't find anything wrong with him. He even asked us if we were sure he fell. He told us he'd probably wake up with a bruise or a bump today. He gave us a list of things to look for. The main thing was vomiting which he hasn't done. During the examination, Goob kept laughing and smiling so much so that the doc had to call in another doc to come see how cute he was.

So we were back home within an hour of his falling. (I love my hospital!) Goob took a nap. Woke up later as happy as a clam. He was normal the rest of the day.

In fact, he woke up this morning with still no bruise or bump or any signs that he had fallen.

So, I've learned my lesson. I'm strapping him down no matter what he's doing or where he's at.

Look what happens when Mommy and Daddy have too much time on their hands...

J and I were both off this weekend, so we got around to do those chores we've been putting off. At the top of the list was going through Goob's closet and putting away anything that doesn't fit our Goob. We're not getting rid of anything. They're just being put away from #2 (who is not on his way anytime soon!) Anyways we had fun.

Goob wanted to know what the heck we were doing to all his clothes!

Once we told him, he pretended to be asleep so he wouldn't have to help. Sneaky, little Goob!

A few minutes later he decided to join in on the fun. He likes to try on hats!

His daddy thought he looked cool his this. Ha!

We had more pics, but I felt/looked like crap that day so I'm definitely not putting those up here.

We started solids on Saturday!

We're working on rice cereal now. It was fun....

....and messy.

He's just getting rice cereal for the next two weeks. Then we'll start adding a new fruit or vegetable every 5 days. Yum!

Hurricane Ike

This is getting ridiculous. This will be our 2nd hurricane this year. The county will be deciding whether or not to have a mandatory evacuation later today. Yuck.

Goob says "Look what I can do!"

Hola!

"I'm bored. What should I do?"

"Let me try this"

"Hey, this is neat!"

"Ta-da! Look what I can do! Haha. Mommy and Daddy are in trouble now!"

A Fun, New Toy!

Goob is loving his exersaucer. He's figured out how make all the noises and songs play. Once you put him in there, he has no time for you anymore. He's too busy.

Goob's day at the beach!

Last weekend, Goob's grandparents were in town (J's parents). On Saturday evening, we went down to the island to meet some of their friends. It's a real shame that we live 30 minutes from the beach and we haven't been in forever. Anyways, it was Goob's first trip to the beach. Too bad we didn't go a bit earlier to enjoy more daylight.

Here are some pictures:
